Update Thursday #67

Welcome to Update Thursday, my own personal meme of sorts where I post an update of the goings on at my blog, with reading, with writing, and beyond. Feel free to borrow the idea from me for your own bookish musings.

Reading...

Books I finished this week:

~The Unquiet by Jeannine Garsee~

Books I'm reading now (and some still):

547 of 1026 E.E. Cummings poems finished (30 this week)

Writing...

~ If Only We ~ 30,010 ~
~ Before We Knew ~ 11, 449 ~
~ Whatever This Is ~ outlining ~
~ Under Enchanted Skies ~ 1,550/plotting ~
~ Beyond The Horizon ~ plotting ~
~ So I Thought ~ plotting ~
~ Hold Your Breath ~ plotting ~

I did reach my goal of 30,000 words so YAY! But, I was hoping to break more than that. Why didn't I? Well, I needed to remap out my story. Remember my idea with the index cards? It was time to sit down and get that going. So I did. Check it out:

Three giant blank calendars
Pretty colored index cards to fit the spaces

I didn't get to work on mapping anything out, but this alone is progress. I'm also working on coming up with more background details on all of my characters. I want to flesh out the reasons why my characters act like they do, the things they love... Right now, I feel like I can't write much unless I have more of this worked out. I sometimes forget certain details and that's no good.

Otherwise...

My mom got a TV stand... so that means I can have my entertainment center back. And that means, my room can be complete. FINALLY. It's been almost two years since we moved in here, it's about time. So I've been going through my room and moving furniture. By next week it shall all be done.

To get myself motivated, I started listening to music on Pandora. I created a playlist by entering Wham! (how I adore George Michael's voice), which ends up playing all kinds of great 80's tunes. It played "Shattered Dreams" by Johnny Hates Jazz at one point, triggering me to pull it up on YouTube and put it on repeat. Oh, so good. It's times like these that I wonder if I was supposed to grow up in the 80's instead of the 90's. Then I hear my favorite 90's music and realize I wouldn't be me without that either.

I'll be working on my blog plans for August and September soon. I want to stay ahead and keep the content going on here. Especially once my blog post series ends. I've got a few things in the works. As much as I want to have lots going on here, I want to keep up with writing my book. I'm not as ahead of the game as I'd like. Oh, the balancing acts we face. *sigh*

Until next time!

~Jessica

PS: Scheduling this so I can sleep in, and take care of things outside the blog.

  1. I like your calender idea. Maybe if I was more organized I'd actually get some writing done. ;) Have "fun" moving your furniture around. It sould be nice when it's all settled.

    1. You should make a calendar too. :) It will be so nice when it's complete! :D

  2. That calendar idea is wicked awesome, girl! I might have to adapt it for my own purposes, since I'm finally kicking around the idea of writing a novel. :) Happy writing and reading, Jess!

  3. Hooray and congrats on breaking 30,000 words! *happy dance* That's super exciting.

I have Meant to Be from NetGalley, but I haven't had a chance to read it yet (all the reading I'm doing for the Canadian Spotlight Month/Canadian Reading Challenge is slowing me down with everything else). And yay for Charmed Thirds! I want to read the first two this summer since an incredibly wonderful beautiful amazing friend sent them to me. :-) I'm really anxious to hear what you think of For Darkness Shows the Stars, and I need to read The Princess Bride, I've heard nothing but amazing things about it.

80s and 90s music! Is there anything better?

Keep up the great work! <3

    1. Thanks sweetie! :D

I'm reading it since I downloaded it and am getting short on time, lol. I probably should have waited, but it is actually quite good so far! *HUGS* I hope you can at least read the first book and dive into the world of Jessica Darling. I am anxious to finish both--been seeing great reviews lately!

There's nothing better! Except some 70's music... ;)

  4. Sometimes, when I plan too much about my characters ... or I should say, when I think about them TOO much and try to figure out too much about them, I lose the story. Does that ever happen to you?

The calendar looks like a neat way to schedule. I need to try something out. I never write with outlines, but that has never gotten me anywhere, so it's time to shake things up a bit.

    Congrats on hitting 30k!

    1. I think that's what kept me from ever getting started on actually writing--spending too much time on unnecessary details, or overthinking details. Since it was my NaNo novel, I only spent maybe a few hours total plotting it. So I had no real idea what my characters looked like in general. :P

I'm thinking I need to have better outlining... but the calendar might work well for me. Maybe it would work for you! I should do a post on it when I finish putting it together.

      Thank you!! :)

    2. I hope you do! I love reading about how others write/plan.

  5. Isn't it so difficult juggling blogging and writing at the same time? I'm glad you've been able to read the 30,000 word mark on your novel. That calendar looks like a complicated bit of work! Sometimes I spend so much time preparing and organising that I talk myself out of writing. Actually, that's what's been happening for the last few weeks!

    1. It is difficult sometimes! Lol, it does seem a bit much, but it will totally get my thoughts together. I drew out a smaller one and ended up scribbling it up too much and changed too many things around. I needed a not so permanent calendar I could change easily. :P
