Waiting On Wednesday (18): The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

~*As for me...*~

Well, March has been a major month of ups and downs in every sense. I had to spend most of the month packing and then moving to a new apartment. A lot of it seemed to go smoothly enough, but now I'm running into other issues that need to be resolved quickly. Ah, the joys of being an adult!

So, anyways...

I've been at the new place for a week and I'm still trying to unpack sections little by little. It looks a lot better than the first couple days. Luckily for me, I have an extra closet to put random stuff in for now--like my online sale stuff and stuff I'm going to donate to a thrift store. So it is A LOT nicer because the clutter isn't as overwhelming.

Unfortunately, between packing and moving and unpacking and working way too much overtime (again), I haven't had ANY free time for writing. AT ALL. And that's just disappointing. Very disappointing. I'll probably have to push the release date for Not Until Tonight back yet again. Once I finish writing the whole thing, I'll decide on a new date. For now, I'm changing it to May (tentatively on the 9th, but I may have to push that back) because I want to give it enough time. I hate delaying it though.

BUT!!! When I get settled in here (which should be within the next week *fingers crossed*) I'll be able to get back to Not Until Tonight and that makes me happy because I want to share this story. And when I'm finished with this one, I can start writing another one and that makes me happier because I have SO MANY STORIES to tell.

~*Divergent...*~

Other than all the above, not much else has been happening due to no free time. I DID go see Divergent the weekend it came out and it was pretty good. As I was watching it the first time, I was thinking about all the different things that take place throughout in the book and matching up and awaiting the next. There were several aspects missing, which was a little bit frustrating... BUT... they only have so much time in the movie. I was mostly concerned because there are things tied to the second book that needed to be explored in the first movie to make sense. I can't complain though because they did do a good job, and I really enjoyed the acting all around (especially Theo James *swoon*). I'll probably go see it at least one more time in the theater.

People are saying stuff about them splitting Allegiant into two parts. In my opinion, I don't see it happening. I mean, yeah, they probably WILL just to bring in more money, but nothing really HAPPENED in the third book to warrant dragging it out. And considering the fact that the first movie wasn't as big as they anticipated, not to mention the heated dislike of the third book, I'm doubting they'll extend it to four movies total. This is just me speaking though. *shrugs*

Hopefully everyone has had a great March and here's to a great April!!

Waiting On Wednesday (18): The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly book meme where we get to let everyone know about what books we are eagerly anticipating the release of. WoW is hosted by Jill over at Breaking The Spine.

This week I'm waiting on...

It had to end sometime, but Mara had no idea it would end like this. Experience the mind-blowing conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Mara Dyer trilogy.

Loyalties are betrayed, guilt and innocence tangle, and fate and chance collide in this shocking conclusion to Mara Dyer’s story.

Yeah, so I've been waiting AWHILE to find out what happens next for Mara Dyer. Talk about keeping me on the edge of my seat!!! I'm crossing my fingers that it's not a disappointment like so many other trilogies have been for me. Thinking about this book makes me want to actually reread the first book. <3

The Retribution of Mara Dyer will be released on November 4th 2014.

What are YOU waiting on?

ONCE BURNED Sadie Howard never dates a guy more than once-but Fate has other plans for her when it comes to Aiden Downey, the one that got away. Aiden loved her, left her, and broke her heart. Yet suddenly she's bumping into him at every turn, driven to distraction by his wicked grin and rock-hard body. Now she can't resist finishing what they started-as long as she doesn't let herself fall in love...

TWICE AS TEMPTING Aiden Downey threw away the best thing he ever had when he let Sadie go, and now he's determined to win back the woman he's always wanted. Sadie agrees to let him into her life-and her bed-as long as there are no strings attached. But Aiden's not about to make the same mistake again. Can he convince her to take a second chance on a once-in-a-lifetime love?

My Thoughts:

Okay, so I'm going to admit that when I read the first couple chapters, I might have wanted to throw in the towel. I can't even remember why now, all I remember was I wasn't into it. Then, not long after that, it started to pull me in and I needed to know what happened. And I'm glad too because it was a great story.

Sadie and Aiden aren't the type you expect them to be. Sadie wants Aiden, and Aiden wants Sadie, but not in the same ways. This time, the guy wants more from the relationship than the girl, and I really, really liked seeing that. Aiden has this amazing heart, and he was definitely one of those guys that you just want to wrap your arms around and hold forever. While Sadie still had a lot to learn and I may have wanted to smack her, she did grow, a lot. The two of them together? I pretty much adored it. They have gone through so much and they pull through, side by side.

Even though Hard to Handle is the second book in a series, it can be read as a stand alone in my opinion. I still want to read the first, Tempting the Billionaire, but I'm not sure if I would have if I hadn't read this one first. Go figure. I'm looking forward to more swooning and love connections in Jessica Lemmon's other books.

Lily Stanton's vacation goes from bad to worse when a storm strands her in a foreign country, arguing with an arrogant—and very sexy—stranger over the last available hotel room.

Successful CEO Bruno Komarov wasn't expecting the gorgeous woman checking in at the reception desk to challenge him over a room. Even more surprising, he actually enjoys their exchange.

But when Lily proposes a compromise—she'll take the bed and he can sleep on the couch—Bruno pushes his attraction aside and assures himself that this can remain strictly business. After all, they're both adults capable of keeping their hands to themselves. They'll share the room, get a good night's sleep, and be off to their respective destinations in the morning.

What could possibly happen in just one night?

My Thoughts:

The whole Flaunt series by Entangled is kinda awesome. Romance novellas for 99¢? Sure thing! I was super excited to get the chance via NetGalley to read a couple of them to see if they're worth it. This one was pretty nice.

I liked the initial banter between Lily and Bruno, arguing over who gets the room. It made me chuckle. There is, of course, an attraction. And that, of course, leads to romance. Like the title indicates, it all happens over the course of just the one night, but it was quite a night for them.

One Night in Santiago is one cute read. The story happened a little too fast, and it seemed to end too quickly without much depth. It is a novella though, so I believe that is a lot of it. I am curious to see what else Audra North has up her sleeve, perhaps in a full-length book.

Excerpt:

A hardcover book with a picturesque jacket caught my attention among Krzys’s belongings. I stopped and read the author’s name aloud, “Jan Kochanowski?”

Krzys repeated the name with the Polish pronunciation, which sounded almost nothing like it was spelled. “He’s a famous writer. It’s poetry.”

“Oh, I love poetry.” I reached for the book.

“You do?”

“Absolutely. When I was in college, my major was journalism, but my minor was English literature. I studied a lot of great poets and authors and their works.” I turned the book over and scanned the back cover. “I still have some of my old textbooks in my bookcase.” Why did I bother explaining that to him? He had probably already looked at them. He didn’t exactly act surprised when I told him. “I’ve read so many recent works as well.”

“The Kochanowski book is one of my favorites. The writings are from the 1500’s.”

“You’re kidding. The 1500’s?”

Krzys nodded. “I love to read old writings. It fascinates me how alike we are to people who lived long ago. Our lives today are so different than theirs, but we have the same thoughts and feelings and desires and heartaches as they did. The world goes through changes through the years, but people stay the same.”

I watched him, unblinking. I was taken aback by Krzys. He hadn’t been very talkative since we met, but he had a lot to say, and his words were meaningful. I understood why so many people liked him, but I wondered if anyone ever truly saw him. I turned my attention back to the book. I flipped through the pages, which were written in Polish. “I wish I could read what it says.”

“I have an English copy. It’s here somewhere.” He knelt down and rummaged through his belongings.

I set the book on the table, and a black leather journal caught my attention beside it. I instantly recognized it. I had seen one like it at April’s Bookstore. I had thought about buying one for Jeff on his birthday, but I settled for cologne. I mean, what would Jeff have done with a journal?

I reached for it and leafed through the pages. They were filled with what seemed like poetry and other writings, all handwritten in English and Polish. I stopped on a poem that was written in English.

I watch you standing in front of me, like a flower glistening with dew,
The sun shines lightly all around beautiful you.
Your smile is like magic, it makes me feel brand new,
I have known nothing better, beautiful you.
I feel you in my heart, a feeling that’s deep and true,
It’s here for no one else, beautiful you.

“I found it.” Krzys turned and held the Kochanowski book out, but he dropped it when he saw what I was doing. He snatched the journal away from me so fast that it took a moment for me to realize what had happened.

“What’s wrong?”

“You weren’t supposed to read that.” He slammed it shut.

“Did you write that poem?”

He didn’t answer, but he didn’t have to. His reaction told me that he had.

“Yes,” he admitted after a long pause.

I exhaled. “I didn’t know you wrote poetry.” I clutched my forehead. “Wait. Your ad on the internet said you did, but I didn’t think it was real. I thought it was a pick-up line. That poem was beautiful, Krzys.”

“You’re just saying that.”

“I mean it. It was very touching. Can I read more?” I reached out for the journal.

“No.” He hid it behind his back. “My poems aren’t very good, and I don’t know how to write in English very well yet. I’m still practicing.”

“That’s not true. Your writing is very good.”

He didn’t seem convinced. He pulled his duffel bag out from underneath the coffee table and slipped the journal inside of it.

“What are you going to do with all of those poems?”

“Nothing.” He zipped up his bag.

“Why not?”

He shrugged. “I used to want to be a writer, but everyone always told me I was a dreamer. They said things like that don’t happen to people like me. I knew they were right.”

“You don’t really believe that, do you? You’re not just a dreamer because you want to be a writer.”

He glanced up. “You don’t think so?”

“No. Your writing is a talent, Krzys. Talents are meant to be shared with the world. You can’t keep it locked away inside of you. You have to do something with those poems.”

Review: Asking For Trouble by Tessa Bailey

Title: Asking For Trouble
Author: Tessa Bailey
Published: November 25th 2013

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Buy: Amazon ~*~ Barnes & Noble

Caution: May contain spoilers
Brent Mason and Hayden Winstead can't stand each other. She plans exclusive parties for her rich familys charities. He's a rough and tumble cop who rigs explosives for a living. Could two people be any less suited for conversation? They think not and prefer to keep it that way.

Unfortunately, their two best friends are deeply, disgustingly in love. Forced together, the mutual attraction simmering beneath the surface of Brent and Hayden's non-relationship grows with every argument until it explodes into a scintillating night of mind-blowing sex. And it wont be the last, as far as Brent's concerned.

Hayden has a secret, though. Her father's company is relying on a merger to save them from financial ruin, and only Hayden's marriage to the CEOs wealthy son can secure the deal. If she's to protect her family, she'll have to forget Brent. And he has no intention of being forgotten.

My Thoughts:

When a story starts off with a high level of romance, you know it's going to be good. It was within the first few chapters that it became obvious, which came to me as a shock, considering they can't stand each other. I was expecting a greater build-up, starting with major dislike and leading into sexual tension. It was there, it just progressed a whole lot faster.

Brent and Hayden are both strong-willed, so put two people like that together in a room and it's bound to cause a little bit of trouble (hence the title, lol). But seriously, their relationship was in a league of its own, entertaining and passionate. All the while, Hayden is being forced into another relationship, despite her protests. And as much as she wants to dislike Brent, it's become hard to think about letting him go.

Asking For Trouble brings the trouble and then some. Tessa Bailey knows how to keep you reading. I liked the way Brent and Hayden were together, it was just the right amount of spunk and romance to  keep it going strong. It kept me interested from beginning to end.

Review: Just One Night by Lauren Layne

Title: Just One Night
Author: Lauren Layne

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Buy: Amazon ~*~ Barnes & Noble

Caution: May contain spoilers
In Lauren Layne’s sizzling Sex, Love & Stiletto series, New York’s hottest “sexpert” has been living a lie—and it’s up to one man to keep her honest…all night long.

Riley McKenna knows sex—good sex, bad sex, kinky sex…Her articles in Stiletto magazine are consistently the publication’s most scandalous—and the most read. But Riley has a secret…all that sexy talk? Not an ounce of it comes from personal experience. Her own bedroom escapades are more limited than even her best friends know. When her editor requests that all columnists write something more personal for Stiletto’s anniversary issue, Riley turns to the one man she’s always been able to count on and calls in the favor of a lifetime.

Sam Compton would do anything for Riley McKenna. Anything except be her experimental sex toy. He refuses her request. At least until she tells him that it’ll either be him or she’ll go to someone else. And that, Sam can’t accept. Reluctantly he agrees to her terms—one night of completely meaningless sex in the name of research. Riley thinks she’s prepared for what awaits her in Sam’s bed. After ten years of writing about sex, actually doing it shouldn’t be that different, right? So wrong. What starts as “one time only” becomes “just one more time.” And then one more. And before they know it, Riley and Sam learn first-hand that when it comes to love, there’s no such thing as just one night.

My Thoughts:

I've been super lucky to get approved for every book in Lauren Layne's series on NetGalley. And not just lucky to GET them, but I feel lucky that I got to read three amazing books. This trilogy has it all--from the first book to the last, you're hooked and wanting more even when it's done. I really adored the first book, After the Kiss, and I enjoyed the second, Love the One You're With. But the last one, this one, really took the cake!

Riley and Sam... oh sigh... Their friendship made me smile. And then when Riley starts to manipulate Sam, oh my god, I couldn't stop giggling. He tries to avoid her advances because she's his best friend's sister, but she isn't making it easy. The romance wasn't the only thing great about this story, it was also the other aspects with personal issues and family that made it more worthwhile. But, of course, romance. Wonderful romance. It wasn't forced or flawless, and it had the perfect amount of "will they won't they" going, keeping you on the edge of your seat.

Just One Night is a great book to sit down and read in one night. Riley and Sam's relationship will keep you smiling and swooning the whole way. I'm a little sad that this is the end of the Stiletto girls and their love stories, but I'm looking forward to other stories from Lauren Layne. And you should be reading them too!

Her New Year’s resolution was seduction…

Doctor Ashley Hanes has one mission and one mission only—end her annoyingly long dry streak and ring in the New Year with a bang. Literally. When her long lost and oh-so-sexy ex-best friend, Ethan Pierce, shows up as if he hadn’t broken her heart all those years ago, suddenly she doesn’t want to bring home just any man. She wants Ethan.

What should have been one night of blow-your-mind make-up sex quickly turns into another. And another. Before long, Ashley thinks maybe she and Ethan should reunite for good. If only the elusive bachelor will stop running from his tortured past and trust a future in Ashley’s arms…

My Thoughts:

I just KNEW going into this one I was going to adore it. I love this whole premise: two people who used to be friends meeting up again and realizing there could be much more. This novella was quite enjoyable.

The romance was adorable between Ashley and Ethan. I loved seeing it develop over the course of the book, watching their feelings evolve and twist and confuse them. There's so much emotion involved in their little fling that it's hard not to sit there hanging by a thread waiting for them to realize how much more there is between them despite the years apart.

Kiss Me at Midnight is steamy and sweet. It may be a short and predictable story but, like I said at the beginning of this review: totally adored it. Diane Alberts is completely awesome and I'm already adding more of her books to the to-be-read list. And I may have bought at least one new one since discovering her.
