It was just a work party, filled with kissing the well-dressed rear ends of clients and fake smiles. Until my boss accused me of something I didn’t do. Until I got pissed and then there was this guy who was hot and flirting with me, and then there were his hands and the backseat of my car and a night of everything but you know what.

I never expected to see him again. But suddenly Julian Dohring is everywhere. And I can’t get over the endless tattoos that cover his arms, how he’s apparently a recovering video game addict, and dresses like he’s ready to walk down the red carpet at any moment.

Ten years ago I made a pledge to stay away from alcohol and sex, and to never get too personal with anyone. It’s gotten me this far. I’m twenty-seven, I have a career I’ve worked my heart and soul into, and more money than I could ever blow on shoes and the finer things in life. My attitude and pride have always been enough to keep any man from getting too interested. Until Julian…who claims I can’t dance, and has the nerve to call me a “peach.”

I’m Sage McCain, and needless to say, Julian has my attention.

My Thoughts:

This review is a long time coming... I can't express the excitement when I found out Keary Taylor was writing new adult. If you recall, she wrote What I Didn't Say, which is one of those lovely young adult stories that sticks with you forever.

From the first chapter, you are sucked into the story and the possibilities. Sage is that girl you want to be and want to cheer for. What she and Julian have is amazing. Impossibly amazing. The relationship develops slowly and elegantly. Your heart goes out to Sage, and you're amazed by her strength. You're drawn to the charm of Julian, and to the sweetness that encompasses everything about him. The whole story has you full of emotion--empathizing with the pain and swooning over the love.

Moments of Julian is an impressive new adult novel. It's more sweet than sexy, and there's nothing wrong with that! Keary Taylor has proven time and again the depth of her writing skills. I can't wait to dive into the rest of this series!

Book Blitz: Depths of Lake by Keary Taylor

Welcome to the Depths of Lake by Keary Taylor book blitz!

Depths of Lake by Keary Taylor
(The McCain Saga #3)
Publication date: October 14th 2014
Genres: New Adult, Romance
It was another day at the ranch, training horses and working fifteen hour days. And then the last person I ever expected showed up. Lake McCain: a Marine, tall, ripped—and the best friend of my dead fiancĂ©. Cal died to save Lake, and now Lake claims that he carries a debt to me that he can never repay.

I wanted to brush him off. But then my mom, the manager of the ranch, went and hired him. We spend hours working together with the horses. Lake doesn’t say much. He’s layered and dark and he tries to seem shallow and simple. But he isn’t. There are things under his surface that matter. He works, quiet and strong, and never once lets me down.

Until he confesses that he may be falling in love with me. I can’t deny that there is something between us. But a relationship? I just can’t. I’ve used up all my chances at love. My past relationships have ended in death or disaster, and now I have to live with all of that.

I’m Riley James, and there are depths to Lake—depths to myself—that I don’t think I’ll ever fully understand.

Excerpt

“Thank you for this,” I say, my voice small and quiet. “This was all you. You didn’t have to, and no one asked. But you did it. And for that, I’m grateful.”

Lake slides his hands into his pockets and takes a few slow steps toward me. His eyes drop to the ground at our feet. “You know, for a long time, I’ve felt like I didn’t really matter. If that makes any sense. Being in the Marines helped some. But you know that feeling of emptiness?” he looks up at me, his eyes opening up in a way that I can see. And I do know. “It was always there. But being here lately? It’s changed that. I love what we do here. I love working the ranch and the long days and the feeling that I’m doing something good. That I’m doing something important.”

He takes two more steps toward me. He’s close enough that I can smell him now. The sweat of the day. The scent of his shampoo from this morning. And something that is so Lake that it sends my head spinning.

“But it’s not just the ranch and the work, Riley,” he says quietly. His voice is low and warm, just like the day outside. “It’s you, too. When I’m around you, I feel like I matter.”

Something builds inside of me, something that resembles a thousand hooves beating across the fields at sunrise.

One slow, carefully thought out step at a time, he closes the space between us. He places a hand on the wall on either side of my head, boxing me in. His eyes study my face. My cheeks, my nose, my lips. His face is so close.

Something in my blood jumps to life, and I’m staring at his mouth.

“What’s holding you back, Riley?” he finally says. His voice is low and rough. And there’s a mountain of unspoken words behind it. “Why won’t you let yourself go?”

Excerpt:

“Excuse me, Mr. Vincent?”

My head whips around to see the stranger standing to the side of us. His eyes are stern and intense, and are locked on Gareth.

“Please don’t consider me rude, but you’ve absconded my date and this is our song. May I steal her back?”

Mr. Vincent looks from the stranger to me and back again. It is easy to tell from his expression he would very much like to keep me here and wring any secrets I might hold from me, but he won’t make a scene in public.

“Of course. I wouldn’t want to deny you the company of this lovely woman.” He eyes me once again and everything in them tells me he doesn’t believe what I’ve said. But he turns, and walks away.

When Gareth glances over his shoulder, the stranger wraps one hand around my waist, and takes my hand in his.

“One of the downfalls of working with clients; having to kiss dirty, disgusting asses,” he says, still glaring in Mr. Vincent’s direction. “Right?”

I am very well practiced at looking calm and confident; it comes second nature. But something about Mr. Vincent’s accusations has shaken me. “Yeah,” is all I manage to get out.

“You’re welcome for the rescue.” Suddenly his voice is low in my ear and I faintly feel his lips brush my ear.

“Know I don’t say this often,” I say, my confidence quickly returning. “But thank you.”

“What did the dick want, anyway?” His hand slides around my back a bit more and his fingertips brush my bare back.

It is just warm enough in here to keep the goosebumps from rising on my entire body.

“Company secrets,” I say, trying to sound dismissive. “He obviously doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I think it was just an excuse to get his hands on me.”

He’s quiet and contemplative for just a moment too long and I wonder what he’s thinking about. “Hmm,” he finally says. “Who can blame him?”

Feeling completely normal again, a smile curls on my lips. He pulls me slightly tighter.

“Are you flirting with me?” I ask, letting my voice drop low and quiet.

A small laugh comes between his lips. “Well, if you could dance, I’d already have you in my bed, but since you’ve already stepped on my toes twice in the last two minutes, I’m having second thoughts.”

I pull away from him slightly so I have a clear view of his face. “Excuse me?” I say in half mock, half real offense. “We are simply shuffling in a circle. How could you possibly tell I am a bad dancer? And I did no such thing as stepping on your toes.”

His smile curls once again and he drops the hand that was at my waist. Keeping my hand in his other, he takes one step toward the front door. “I could use some fresh air,” he says. “How about you?”

I’m half tempted to tell him to go find someone else to insult, but it is hot and stuffy in here. Knowing I’m probably setting myself up for a bantering blowout, I allow him to lead me through the crowd.

The noise and music instantly die away when we walk through the glass doors. It’s nearing ten o’clock and all the streetlights around are on, adorned by lights twinkling from windows further in the distance. There might be stars overhead, but they’re covered by a thick layer of Washington late spring clouds. They reflect back a soft city-orange hue.

“I’m sorry about that idiot,” he says as he lets my hand go. He walks to one wall and leans against it, stuffing his hands into his pockets. “Any man should know that’s no way to treat a woman.”

“I know I said thank you earlier,” I say as I wrap my fingers around the other wrist behind my back. “But I could have handled him myself.”

“I don’t doubt it,” he says as those intense eyes stare at me. “I get the feeling you could be quite terrifying if you want to be.”

“I’ve been told that before,” I say as I take two lazy steps toward him. “It usually works pretty well in keeping most men away.”

“Is there a reason you like keeping men away?” he asks, raising an eyebrow.

“I’m not a lesbian,” I defend, though not in the least bit offended. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been accused of it. “So don’t let your imagination start running away from you.”

He shrugs and gives a little cock of his head to the side. “Just checking to make sure I’m not wasting my time.”

“Wasting your time doing what?” I am now only two feet away from him. Away from the packed room filled with well-dressed but overheated bodies, I catch the scent of him: clean and crisp and sophisticated.

“I don’t know yet,” he says. “But I sense it’s going to be something fairly epic.”

Author Keary Taylor talks about What I Didn't Say

After I read the wonderfulness that is the book What I Didn't Say, I had to get in touch with Keary and see if she would be able to tell us more about the story. I personally believe it is an important story to read and highly recommend it to all of my followers. You can see what I thought of it in my review. The story surrounds Jake, who suddenly finds himself unable to speak ever again. For him to communicate with people, he had to learn sign language. Before I read it, I knew there was an important lesson to be learned.

Keary Taylor was more than happy to oblige my request. So, without further adieu, please welcome Keary to Thoughts At One In The Morning!

~*~

T@1AM:
What I Didn't Say is more than just a story you wanted to tell. At the end of the book, you disclose how close it is to you personally. What made you decide to write a story that is extremely personal?

Keary: It was difficult book to write because it was so personal, but there were a few things I had to say that I wanted to say to young adults.  I wanted to give a message of hope and to let people know that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.  You have the power to turn your life into something great.

T@1AM: How much of a parallel is it to real life?

Keary: There is so much in this book that is based on real life.  The hardships were based on my own as well as a few other people I know in my life.  The island is the island I actually live on.  The issues in the book are issues that pretty much every teenager deals with.

T@1AM: Why did you choose to tell the story from a male character's point of view?

Keary: At lot of it was just to do something different.  I wanted the challenge.  And when I pictured this character who could no longer talk, it was always a guy.  Jake really turned out to be a character who is very dear to me.

T@1AM: What are you hoping your readers take away from this story?

Keary: I hope that they can realize that there are always people out there who have things so much worse then they do.  When you're in the teenage years everything feels so dire.  I remember feeling like that.  But things can always get better.  Sometimes you have to make them get better, not just sit around and wait for them to get better.  If you’ve never heard the song “Somebody Wishes They Were You” by Adelita’s Way I encourage you to go listen to it.  I consider it to be the theme song to What I Didn’t Say.

~ Thank you so much for telling us more about your book Keary! ~

What I Didn't Say

Getting drunk homecoming night your senior year is never a good idea, but Jake Hayes never expected it all to end with a car crash and a t-post embedded in his throat.

His biggest regret about it all? What he never said to Samantha Shay. He's been in love with her for years and never had the guts to tell her. Now it's too late. Because after that night, Jake will never be able to talk again.

When Jake returns to his small island home, population 5,000, he'll have to learn how to deal with being mute. He also finds that his family isn't limited to his six brothers and sisters, that sometimes an entire island is watching out for you. And when he gets the chance to spend more time with Samantha, she'll help him learn that not being able to talk isn’t the worst thing that could ever happen to you. Maybe, if she'll let him, Jake will finally tell her what he didn't say before, even if he can't actually say it.

Maybe, if she'll let him, Jake will finally tell her what he didn't say before, even if he can't actually say it.

My Thoughts:

Upon reading the synopsis, I HAD to read this. Several years back I took a sign language class and was amazed by the deaf community. And along with those who are deaf, there are also those who are mute that use sign language. So, I knew that this would be the case in this story, and I wanted to see how it all panned out. I was not disappointed.

The story is told in first person from Jake’s perspective. I loved being in his head. Sometimes being in certain male character’s heads, you want to punch them in the face. This time, I wanted to just pull him into my arms for a hug, and not because of what happened to him, but just because of how he is. Jake is a good guy who doesn’t have a nasty vocabulary. He was a guy you could love and respect, and I did.

Being in Jake’s head, you feel the full force of what the accident did to him. Although he could communicate with people, by either writing it on a notebook or signing, he did a lot of observing and thinking. It was so enveloping that on two occasions after reading, I felt like I was the one who was mute and couldn’t talk. I spent several minutes in absolute silence after coming back to reality. That’s when you know a book has touched you: It feels like it is REALLY happening.

Outside of Jake and his situation, there are other aspects I enjoyed. The love story with Jake and Samantha. That was extraordinary. Jake starts to learn sign language from Sam at school. It actually dove deeper than just the sign language connection they now had. There were things that Sam was going through that Jake never knew about. And these things are a test of the strength of their relationship. I loved his family, how much they cared for him, the effort they put into learning how to communicate with him. And also the friendships he had with his friends pre-accident, and the ones he developed post-accident.

What I Didn’t Say is an excellent tale, with an important moral. What is that moral? I’d like to say, but you honestly just need to read it. Jake’s journey guides him through what could have been versus what now is. He has his moments of idiocy, but he learns to cope and to make the most of the situation. The whole story was a brilliant portrayal of the consequences of one mistake and how one can rise above the ashes and still keep walking. Keary Taylor wrote an amazing story that I will not soon forget. What I Didn’t Say will stay with me a long time.

My Rating:

Exceptional: Stay up until at least 1 AM
