Review: Only You by Marie Landry

Title: Only You

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Ivy's new boss is sexy, Scottish…and comes with an expiration date.

When Ivy reluctantly takes a new part-time job, it’s a means to an end. Doing this favor for her pain-in-the-neck roommate means Ivy can have her apartment to herself again much sooner. The last thing she expects is Hugh—the hot Scot who just happens to be her new boss—asking her out on a date. And then another. And another.

Something about Hugh makes Ivy want to let her guard down and open up, which would be perfect if he wasn't possibly returning to Scotland in a matter of weeks. But maybe that doesn’t matter. Maybe Ivy can learn to live in the moment and have a little fun, even if it means setting herself up for heartache later.

ONLY YOU is a standalone contemporary romance about taking chances, unexpected friendships, and holding on to the things—and people—that matter most.

My Thoughts:

It's no secret that I adore everything Marie Landry writes, but this one went beyond expectations. Ivy's story was so much more than a romance, even though it was an ah-mazing romance. The journey she takes throughout the book brings about all sorts of emotions and feels. You empathize with her as well as root for her from beginning to end. And don't get me started on Hugh. I might either salivate or swoon. It's a tough call. He's my new book boyfriend, but I'm sure Marie already has dibs.

Only You is a beautifully written contemporary romance that will hook you from the start and continue to amaze you until the end. Marie Landry's storytelling ability will have you begging for more once you reach the last page.

Her life hasn't gone as planned, but she's about to realize that sometimes the best things happen when you stop expecting life to be a certain way...

When Rose Morgan put off her college plans to help her mother through a difficult time, she thought it would just be a bump in the road of her journey. She got a job to help pay the bills and started picking up the slack at home. But three years later, her bumpy ride hasn’t smoothed out yet, and Rose feels stuck. She’s working at a job she hates and living with a manipulative mother. She’s tired of feeling like her life has stalled, tired of the resentment and anger building inside her with each passing day.

Then Declan Connelly appears in her life, and even though the hot Irishman is seriously tempting, Rose is determined not to let him in. She’s afraid to suck anyone into her bizarre life, especially someone who seems too charming for his own good. She soon learns there’s more to Declan than his sexy accent and charismatic personality, though. He’s a good man, and he wants Rose in his life, baggage and all. He’s got his own, and he isn’t scared away like she originally feared he would be.

Everything in Rose’s life is changing quickly. It’s finally her time--time to figure out what she wants and what her future holds. Time to get swept off her feet and not fight it. But when her plans might take her away from all the amazing new things in her life, including Declan, Rose has to make a choice. Is she willing to chase her dreams, even if it means letting go of love?

My Thoughts:

Christmas in the Air is an absolutely adorable short story! I loved seeing Rose and Declan again, watching them in their new life together. One of my favorite aspects of this was seeing how much Rose has grown from the first book--how strong and confident she is. It absolutely gave me this warm and happy feeling inside for her. Thank you, Marie, for this lovely little snippet into one of my favorite couples!

Interview and Giveaway with Marie Landry & Spotlight on her latest release, Something in the Air!

I am so happy to have one of my dearest friends and fellow author Marie Landry on the blog today. She and I chatted a little bit about her latest book, Something in the Air, and some other fun things...

Interview with Marie Landry

Jessica: Hi! Welcome to Thoughts! I'm so happy to have you on the blog to talk about your books. First off, tell us a little bit about Something in the Air.

Marie: Thank you for having me, Jess! Something in the Air is a coming of age story that focuses on self-discovery, friendship, love, and the importance of pursuing your dreams. Plus there's a hot, sweet Irishman as the love interest that I'm quite fond of. ;-)

Jessica: Speaking of that hot, sweet Irishman, I have to say that you really captured Declan's accent/manner of speaking perfectly in the novel. Did you have to do some research for that?

Marie: Thank you, I'm glad you think so! I'm mostly Irish on my mum's side, so I've been fascinated by Ireland and Irish people for as long as I can remember. I've always had an ear for accents, cadence, and phrasing, so while I've picked a lot up from listening to people, I did do some research - common Irish phrases and wording especially. I dated someone who's Irish, so that's where I picked up the Gaelic terms of endearment Declan uses with Rose...and trust me, they really are as swoonworthy as they sound!

Jessica: I believe it! Were there any challenges that you faced while writing this book?

Marie: This was actually one of the most challenging books I've written. I started writing it in the summer of 2013 and got stuck around 50,000 words so I set it aside. It took about a year and a half for me to get back to it, and I don't think I would have gotten past my mental block with the story without the help of my amazing critique partner. She read what I'd written so far, gave me feedback, and helped me brainstorm until I finally knew where I wanted the story to go.

Jessica: Now that it's November, a lot of writers are participating in NaNoWriMo, including you. What are you working on for it?

Marie: I'm doing NaNoWriMo in an unconventional way. I'm starting out by writing a short holiday story that's a follow-up to Something in the Air. Once that's done, I'll be working on a contemporary YA project that I started a few years ago and never finished.

Jessica: Have any of the stories you wrote during NaNoWriMo been published?

Marie: For 2013's NaNoWriMo I wrote the second book in my Angel Island companion series, After the Storm.

Jessica: You had the amazing opportunity to go to Europe this summer with your friend Krista. You've been sharing some pretty awesome pictures on your blog for Wanderlust Wednesday. Will you be using some of that trip in future stories?

Marie: Definitely! I'm working on a short story right now that's a follow-up to Something in the Air, and it's set in London. I also have several other story ideas that involve travel in the UK and Europe. I fell completely in love with London and Rome in particular on my travels.

Jessica: Something I've always admired about you is how you champion diversity not only in the books you write but the books you read as well. What are some books that have especially touched you that you think everyone needs to read?

Marie: Thank you! I really do think diversity in all forms is so important. Everyone deserves to see themselves reflected on the page. A few of my favourites are Trust the Focus by Megan Erickson (LGBTQ romance), The Summer of Chasing Mermaids by Sarah Ockler (POC main character with a disability), Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone (the main character has OCD), Dumplin' by Julie Murphy (deals with weight and body issues), and Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli (LGBTQ YA). These are just a few of my favourites, but you can see a more comprehensive list on my blog.

Jessica: It's almost been four years since you published your first book, Blue Sky Days. What have you learned from this journey as an author?

Marie: I've learned so much. With the help of a great critique partner, beta readers, and editor, I feel like I've grown a lot as a writer. I've also learned how invaluable the writing and book blogging community is. Their passion and dedication still amazes me.

Jessica: I agree! Thank you so much for stopping by Thoughts to chat with me! Could you tell my readers where they can follow you and learn more about your books?

Marie: Thank you for having me! I'm available pretty much everywhere online - I have a blog, plus I'm on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. You can learn more about my books on my blog and from GoodReads.

My Thoughts:

I have had the wonderful opportunity to not only become friends with Marie Landry, but also her critique partner. I got to see the first part of this story early on and I've been in love with it since the beginning.

Rose is a character you can easily relate to because everyone has something in their life that has caused them to feel out of control. She starts taking a step outside her comfort zone with the help of her best friend, Dante. That's when she meets Declan. She's immediately drawn to him, but she's not ready to bring him into the mess that is her life. He's relentless, though, and he wants to have her in his life, if she'll let him.

This story isn't all romance, which is probably what makes it even better. There are secondary characters--from the diner she works at, her father and his new wife, Declan's family, and, of course, Dante--all of which add to Rose's journey in one way or another. As Rose opens herself up to the possibility of love, she has to decide what else she wants from life. When she gets the chance to do something amazing, she has to make some tough decisions. It's now her chance to choose where her life leads her to next.

Something in the Air is a shining example of what new adult is all about. I was enveloped in Rose's world, watching her change from a caterpillar to a butterfly. And the romance with Declan? Beyond swoonworthy and extraordinarily sweet. By far, this is my favorite book by Marie Landry!

Angel Island Series by Marie Landry Boxed Set Release

Marie Landry has combined all three books in her Angel Island companion series - Waiting for the Storm, After the Storm, and Take Them by Storm - into a box set. For this week only, you can get the set for just $2.99, which is all three books for the price of one. The box set also includes an exclusive sneak peek at a chapter of Marie's upcoming New Adult novel, Something in the Air.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Three girls exploring sisterhood and friendship, finding love, and discovering their place in the world.

After the death of her mother, the last thing seventeen-year-old Charlotte O'Dell wants to do is spend the summer on Angel Island with her family. Her younger sister hates her, and her dad is in his own little world. It's a recipe for a disastrous summer on the island, until Ezra Rhodes walks into her life.

The boy next door makes Charlotte forget her almost paralyzing fear of really living her life. Stunted from taking care of her mother in her last months, Charlotte is drowning. With Ezra, she feels something again, and as he repairs her family's summer home, she dares to think he might actually be fixing her, too. Ezra challenges Charlotte to leave her comfort zone, and as their friendship slowly blossoms into more, Charlotte begins to come alive again.

But Ezra has secrets...secrets he isn't sharing with Charlotte. Despite her new-found happiness in Ezra's arms, Charlotte can't help but feel there's a storm on the horizon. And she isn't sure if she and Ezra can weather it unscathed.

For most people, starting senior year at a new high school would be a nightmare, but for Ella O’Dell it’s the new beginning she desperately needs. Two months after her mother’s death, she’s ready to leave behind the rebellious, unhappy person she became when she found out her mom was dying.

When Ella meets River Maracle and Sadie Fitzgerald, she begins to learn it’s okay to be herself, even if that means being different. River and Sadie aren’t ashamed of their misfit status—River grew up on a reserve, and his mother is the school counselor; Sadie stands out with her funky homemade clothes, and is a master at ignoring the whispered rumors that have plagued her since the beginning of high school.

Ella finds a kindred spirit in Sadie, and something more in River. After almost a year of pretending to be someone she’s not, she finally embraces life and allows herself to have fun without constant guilt. But despite her budding happiness, something is off with her new life. She doesn’t want to dwell on the past, but Angel Island is a small place, and she soon realizes her demons are harder to outrun than she thought…

Sadie Fitzgerald has always been different, and not just because she makes her own clothes and would rather stay home watching Doctor Who than party with kids her age. When it’s time to leave Angel Island for college, Sadie is eager to put her old life behind her. Small-minded people and rumors have plagued her for years, but with the love of her adoptive family, the O’Dells, Sadie has learned to embrace who she is. Now she’s not afraid to admit the rumors about her are true: she’s gay.

For the first time in her life, Sadie feels free to be herself. She dives into college life and begins volunteering at the local LGBT center, where she discovers her small-town upbringing left holes in her education about life outside Angel Island.

The world is a bigger and more accepting place than Sadie ever imagined. She’s finally found where she belongs, but with the reappearance of someone from her past, an unexpected new friendship, and a chance at love, Sadie soon realizes she still has a lot to learn about life, friendship, and love.

This book is a standalone companion novel to Waiting for the Storm and After the Storm. The books do not need to be read together or in order, but please note that this synopsis contains mild spoilers for After the Storm.

My Thoughts:

How to express my thoughts when it comes to this novel... Well, let's see what we can do.

First of all... let's talk Sadie...

description

Completely one of a kind with her handmade outfits and unique self. She's finally out there in the real world, in college, trying to make something of herself. Make a difference and embrace her true self, all of it. It's definitely something all of us strive for, and Sadie's got the opportunity. Of course, she's going to make a few mistakes along the way with choices she makes.

I really wish I could go into all the details as to why this novel is so amazing. Unfortunately, it's impossible to without getting all spoilery. But, I will tell you this... The people Sadie encounters will make you grin, giggle, and want to hug them. There's so much depth to every character.

Still not enough? Well...

description

Seriously, though.

I loved watching Sadie grow over the first few months of college. She still has much to learn, but she learns a heck of a lot in that short period of time about love, life, friends, and family. Not everything is going to be perfect, not everyone is going to accept her, but she doesn't care. She stands up for herself and for that she deserves this...

description

Take Them By Storm is one of those books that takes you by surprise. Not that I've ever doubted Marie Landry's talent, just that it's a new kind of new adult novel with more to it than just potential romance. It's a journey to discovering yourself and where you fit into the world around you. I loved seeing everyone from the first two books in the Angel Island series again--especially seeing the strong bonds Sadie has with both River and Ella. I would highly recommend this story to anyone and everyone!

She writes happily ever afters while dreaming about the day she’ll have her own epic love story to tell. Most days you can find her writing, reading, fantasizing about traveling the world, listening to U2, watching copious amounts of TV on DVD, or having grand adventures with her nephews and niece.
