~The Latest~
I *finally* have a regular schedule for work this coming week. One of my coworkers said that I'm officially one of them now, lol. It's not bad actually, 2 of the 5 days are same as my training schedule. Now that I have one, I can start figuring out a routine for everything else. THANK GOODNESS.
~Services Tab~
You may or may not have noticed my little "Services" tab at the top of my shiny new blog (oh yes, Firefly reference). I wanted to talk about it. I have been bouncing around the idea of starting an editing service. Usually the biggest complaint with indie novels is the spelling and grammar. I'm not sure why this is the case, but I think part of the reason is because professional editing costs WAY too much for them to invest in it. Shouldn't there be a cheaper alternative? Although I'm not a professional editor, I have a knowledge of basic spelling and grammar. What if I offer a basic service where I go through a novel at a lower cost? Clean up most of the mistakes so that it doesn't look as sloppy.
It's just an idea though. I am in the process of working out the details. I need to do a little more research before I start it up. What do you think though? A question for the authors: Would you like to have a cheaper editing service? Even if that person isn't a professional editor? Just curious.
Oh... and speaking of Firefly... To all my Castle loving friends: Tomorrow's episode is going to be epic. I saw a preview clip on their Facebook page--Firefly references all over the place. I love how Nathan Fillion can make jokes about it.
Much love to all!
I don't know how you do it all Jessica. I can barely manage to do one post a week! I should go back and read your thoughts on Scarlet as I've been meaning to read it for a while. I hope you're enjoyig the readalong. As for te editing service, I think people would be interested even if you're not a professional. It just depends on what you can offer and if you're a good fit for the MS you're editing. Maybe offer to edit a small percentage of the MS so that author can get a feel for what you do and judge whether you'd be suitable to edit their work? I know a few freelance editors who do that.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how I do it either, sometimes I just want to take a little break. :P I am enjoying Scarlet. It's very interesting!
DeleteI saw an editor offering that option so that a person can choose to use your services or not. It's an excellent idea, no pressure for the author to pay for something that won't be what they're looking for. I'm thinking I should edit for a couple people for free first, then they can vouch for me. ;)
Dude! My mum and I were JUST talking tonight about a proofreading service... we were both reading in the living room and I kept reading her the mistakes in the indie book I was reading and she said she should start a proofreading service, and I said you and I had talked about it after you beta read TGC...I'll write you a recommendation if you do get started and need references!
ReplyDeleteI won't get the Firefly references in Castle. Booo...but I get to look at Nathan Fillion for an hour so...yaaaay! lol
Glad you got your new schedule!
AHHH!!! I was so going to ask you to write a recommendation for me. I do need to have a couple other people to attest to my editing skills though. But having you backing me will be GREAT. There's a need for a cheap editing service, a huge need, so I'm crossing my fingers it could work.
DeleteAwww! Maybe your library has Firefly on DVD, you so need to see it. But YES, being able to look at him is enough. <3
Me too!!!
