Review: Impossible by Komal Kant

Caution: May contain spoilers

Ashton Summers is on her way to becoming the most popular girl in school and nothing—or no one—is going to stand in her way. Especially not Luca Byron, her freak neighbor, with his tattoos, loud music, and distracting green eyes.

Luca Byron has three goals in life: get through high school with a low profile, make sure his garage band becomes something more than a hobby, and try to forget about his insufferable ex-best friend, Ashton, who he can’t get out of his mind.

The last thing Ashton and Luca want to do is rekindle their friendship, but when Ashton takes a tumble down the social ladder, Luca—with his new makeover—is the only one who can help her rise up again by pretending to be her boyfriend. At first, being together is unbearable and annoying, but things start to change as Ashton and Luca discover the real reasons they drifted apart seven years ago.

Now, keeping their hands off each other seems impossible.

My Thoughts:

Stories about a boy and a girl who are fighting the feelings of hatred and love at the same time thrill me. The whole opposites attract thing. It almost always ends up in the formulaic fashion but I like it. It’s the journey I love more than anything, the banter and the feelings that overwhelm. This story had it all.

Ashton and Luca are the right kind of pairing to root for. They grew up together, fell apart, and are now finding themselves in situations that are bringing them together again. Ashton isn’t necessarily the best person, she’s actually quite the mean girl. I hated her for that, I admit it, but at the same time I hoped that she would learn and grow up. Luca, however, you can’t help but love him for all he is. He’s a wonderful guy, and you want Ashton to notice and realize that he’s there.

There is more to this story than the romantic tension. There are some the high school dramatics that take place with Ashton’s best friend Kance. It tears Ashton apart from her friends and draws her to Luca. In the midst of the drama, the reasons why Ashton and Luca drifted apart come out. Then all those years of being apart makes sense.

Impossible is quite possibly impossible to not like. The sexual tension is well played, and the romance isn’t overdone or underdone. Komal Kant has made a great debut as an indie author. I look forward to seeing the other stories she has in store.

Question of the Moment: Do you judge a book by its cover? (10)

A lot of people claim that they don’t but I believe that a decent amount of those people actually do. I would like to claim that I don’t, but honestly, I do. There are some books I read regardless of the cover but there are far more that I want to read MORE because of the cover. Take for example The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. I remember seeing the original hardcover’s cover and thinking how boring the cover looks. I don’t even remember whether the synopsis intrigued me or not. Then I saw the paperback version and fell in love. I read the synopsis and I’m sold.

I think that’s why when it comes to me picking out a cover for my novels, I want them to look amazing. Not necessarily for the sake of getting more attention from readers and bloggers, but mostly for myself. It would drive me nuts if my cover picture sucked. Admit it--you would feel the same!

How about you? Do you ever judge a book by its cover or do you focus on what the book is about? Have you ever not picked a book up because of the cover only to discover later on that it is an amazing story? I’d love to hear you weigh in on this!

AHHHHH! Okay, I'm not freaking out, just a tad slap happy at the moment. Ever since finishing my first full write through (see above link), I have been in a pretty decent mood, aside from the occasional mood swing. Lol. Um... I can't really think of anything special. I had a good time with my best friend last Saturday night. I am *trying* to get a group together to go roller skating this Sunday. It's been years since I've gone, I'm quite overdue for the exercise and the fun.

Have a great weekend!!!

Before Kai joined the Cloud Fleet, he wandered… AMONG THE NAMELESS STARS

Four years before the events of FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS, the servant Kai left the North Estate, the only home he’d ever known, and Elliot North, the only girl he ever loved, in search of a better life. But the journey was not an easy one.

Featuring narrow escapes, thrilling boat races and at least one deadly volcanic wasteland.

My Thoughts:

You all know how much I adored For Darkness Shows The Stars, and the book it was inspired by, Jane Austen’s Persuasion. When I learned of this novella from Kai’s perspective, it was a must must must read for me. I adored Kai. I adored him to pieces. So being able to read his side of the story was the best thing ever.

It was very interesting to see how things happened once Kai left the North Estate and Elliot. He had a rough time of it for awhile. The world he lived in was just horrible. I wanted to reach out and smack people for their attitudes, but that was life for them as Post Reductionists. I kept falling for Kai when he couldn’t stop writing letters he would never send to Elliot. It’s amazing how he survived to be able to meet back up with her in FDSTS.

If you read For Darkness Shows The Stars and loved it, then you need to read Among The Nameless Stars. Diana Peterfreund does not disappoint in telling this little story. You will love Kai all the more so than you already did. So go get a copy and start reading!

Review: Nobody But Us by Kristen Halbrook

Title: Nobody But Us
Author: Kristen Halbrook

Genre: Young Adult

Caution: May contain spoilers

Bonnie and Clyde meets IF I STAY in this addictively heart-wrenching story of two desperate teenagers on the run from their pasts.

They’re young. They’re in love. They’re on the run.

Zoe wants to save Will as much as Will wants to save Zoe. When Will turns eighteen, they decide to run away together. But they never expected their escape to be so fraught with danger....

When the whole world is after you, sometimes it seems like you can’t run fast enough.

Nobody But Us, told in alternating perspectives from Will and Zoe, is an unflinching novel, in turns heartbreaking and hopeful, about survival, choices, and love...and how having love doesn’t always mean that you get a happy ending. Described as “beautiful, heartbreaking, and exhilarating” by Kody Keplinger, author of The DUFF, Nobody But Us will prove irresistible to fans of Nina Lacour, Jenny Han, and Sara Zarr.

My Thoughts:

This book was one of those I had heard about since the beginning. I love YA Highway and it seems like every author on there has great work. When the opportunity arrived to get this ARC, I thought it was worth giving a shot.

The story of Will and Zoe wasn’t exactly what I expected. All I remembered from the synopsis was that they were a modern day Bonnie and Clyde. The depth of their backgrounds and what has lead them to running off like this is intense. The feelings that they both experience during this journey are hard to handle. They are both struggling with what they are doing, what is right and wrong.

Despite their constant ups and downs, they still love each other, and it shows. Sure, they have moments that make it seem like they don’t care, but whenever those moments came, all I could think is how realistic it is. They're not perfect. They made mistakes. Some of those mistakes were pretty big. Yet they kept pulling through and heading toward a place they imagined would be better for both of them to start over and spend the rest of their lives together.

Nobody But Us is an overwhelmingly intense read. When I was getting close to the end, I could not believe what was happening. And how it ended? To be completely honest, I did not like it one bit. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the story was well written and a very truthful portrayal of young love when times are tough. I look forward to what Kristen Halbrook comes up with next.

What if your life wasn’t your own?

Liv comes out of a coma with no memory of her past and two distinct, warring voices inside her head. Nothing, not even her reflection, seems familiar. As she stumbles through her junior year, the voices get louder, insisting she please the popular group while simultaneously despising them. But when Liv starts hanging around with Spencer, whose own mysterious past also has him on the fringe, life feels complete for the first time in, well, as long as she can remember.

Liv knows the details of the car accident that put her in the coma, but as the voices invade her dreams, and her dreams start feeling like memories, she and Spencer seek out answers. Yet the deeper they dig, the less things make sense. Can Liv rebuild the pieces of her broken past, when it means questioning not just who she is, but what she is?

    My Thoughts:

I have a curiosity inside when I read a synopsis like the above. Especially when it’s not going to be some sort of paranormal or fantasy element. It makes me think, “Oh, what could it possibly be?!” and I must know. So when I got the opportunity to read this, I was excited.

Liv can’t remember what happened to her or why she has two voices battling in her head. Nor can she understand why her parents are so evasive when it comes to answering questions about her life before the accident. They are starting over in a new town and Liv starts to go to school despite her mom’s paranoia. She tries hard to fit in with her classmates, even though part of her doesn’t want to trust them. At the same time, she finds herself drawn to Spencer, the guy who is a loner at school.

It’s a bit difficult for her to fit in, since she not only doesn’t remember life before the accident, but the simplest of things, like a knock-knock joke, is completely new to her. Spencer starts helping her discover these things one at a time, and they get closer to each other. All the while, Liv is having vivid dreams that feel more like flashbacks to her former self. Only nothing is making sense, the pieces just don’t fit in together. Will they ever fit together?

All The Broken Pieces was a wild ride of epic proportion. I love when you can’t figure out what is going on. The flashbacks keep you guessing and wondering why you don’t know what it could be. The ending was spectacular. I didn’t see that coming. Cindy Madsen can keep your eyes glued to the page because she knows how to keep the story interesting and mysterious. So glad I got the chance to read this one.

Question of the Moment: What have you learned from expanding your reading? (9)

When I started Thoughts At One In The Morning, my aim was to focus mostly on Young Adult novels and maybe weave in a few other genres. I would occasionally read Middle Grade and just started getting interested in some Adult Fiction and Chick Lit. At the beginning of 2012, I set out to read more Classics. I even expanded into the (not quite recognized just yet) New Adult genre. It has its similarities to YA, but definitely more along the lines of Chick Lit. There are some that I imagined were like New Adult but turned out to be much closer to Adult Fiction.

If I take a look at all the above, how I feel after reading in these different categories, there is one conclusion. I prefer Young Adult over all of them. Don’t get me wrong, there are pros for the other genres, and I do find certain novels held a special appeal to me. There’s just something more appealing about YA-maybe it’s due to the innocence of it, less swearing and sex. I can focus more on the story and the character, instead of cringing when the character can’t stop dropping the F-bomb. This doesn’t mean I won’t venture out and read the occasional Chick Lit/New Adult novel. I just think I’m going to be more cautious as to which ones I decide to pick.

How about you? How has your reading expanded through the years? What kind of genres have you learned to love? Which ones have you decided aren’t for you? I’d love to hear your reading story!

I don't know what it is, but this last week just seemed to hate me. There were no major catastrophes or anything, so please don't worry! It just boils down to Murphy's Law. Sort of. I think I just need to get out of the house and do something fun, get my mind off reality. I mean, 2013 is supposed to be epic, right?

    *sigh*

Other than those little things, I've been fine. Keeping up with my daily/weekly 2013 goals, working toward accomplishing some of those things on the Jessica List. Hopefully I'll have more to say next week! ^_^

Review: City Of Bones by Cassandra Clare

    Title: City Of Bones

    Published: March 27th 2007
    Source: Purchased
    Genre: Young Adult Paranormal
Buy: Amazon ~*~ Barnes & Noble

    Caution: May contain spoilers
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

    My Thoughts:

With the upcoming movie adaptation, this book is on the radar and being bumped up everyone’s reading list. Well, it was for me anyway. Not just because of the movie, but also because I heard such great things about Cassandra Clare’s writing style. As a writer, I wanted to read it for myself so that I can see what the hype is all about. Let me tell you, it really was wonderfully written. Exceptionally so, in description and dialogue and pacing and intrigue and action.

The story itself sucks you in quickly and immediately you are there with Clary, seeing the shocking things she’s seeing for the first time. When her mom goes missing and she stays with the Shadowhunters, there is so much to learn and so much going on. They are and aren’t welcoming at the same time. Jace is hard to read, but the mystery of him become swoonworthy. He and Clary together talking is the best thing I have read in a long time. I find great amusement in crazy flirtatious banter and this… THIS… is freaking hilarity at its best.

The other characters throughout were well done. Simon was one of those characters that, to me, turned out to be a whiny lovesick frustration. He’s a good guy, don’t get me wrong, I’m just over the whole best guy friend who’s always there and in love with the heroine. As much as I would expect to be the one to love the idea of falling for the best friend, it just never works for me in paranormal/fantasy stories. Alec and Isabelle were dynamic characters and I’m curious to see what happens next in their lives.

City Of Bones was a winner as far as I’m concerned. There was such insanity happening that it kept me on the edge of my seat. I do have to admit that I am not necessarily into the whole Shadowhunter aspect of the story, and I may not get to the rest of the series for awhile, but the book kept me interested. Cassandra Clare is an amazing author. I would recommend the book on the writing alone, even if the premise doesn’t completely intrigue you.

    Caution: May contain spoilers

Anna remembers a time before boys, when she was little and everything made sense. When she and her mom were a family, just the two of them against the world. But now her mom is gone most of the time, chasing the next marriage, bringing home the next stepfather. Anna is left on her own—until she discovers that she can make boys her family. From Desmond to Joey, Todd to Sam, Anna learns that if you give boys what they want, you can get what you need. But the price is high—the other kids make fun of her; the girls call her a slut. Anna's new friend, Toy, seems to have found a way around the loneliness, but Toy has her own secrets that even Anna can't know.

Then comes Sam. When Anna actually meets a boy who is more than just useful, whose family eats dinner together, laughs, and tells stories, the truth about love becomes clear. And she finally learns how it feels to have something to lose—and something to offer. Real, shocking, uplifting, and stunningly lyrical,  Uses for Boys is a story of breaking down and growing up.

    ~synopsis from Goodreads

    My Thoughts:

I wanted so much to like this book. I went into it with bright eyes expecting a cute story about a girl who distracts herself with boys. What happened? It wasn’t exactly a cute story. It was a very depressing story.

Anna’s story starts when she’s seven and the beginning progresses to her preteens quickly. We learn of the deteriorating relationship between her and her mother. At thirteen is when the boy distractions start. Let me say it straight up--I thought the boy distractions were going to be of the making out kind. I was wrong--it was the having sex kind. So, it kind of threw me off.

Since Anna’s mom isn’t around and they aren’t close like they used to be, she dives into this world of having sex with boys without a care in the world. These distractions keep her from understanding real life. She eventually drops out of school, she gets a job, she gets an apartment. She grows up too fast. When she meets Sam, she begins to see the more important things. And although there’s some sort of redemption in the end, it’s still barely hanging by a thread because it just happens suddenly.

Uses For Boys was a hard read. Seeing Anna going through all of this made me want to take her under my wings. It’s a realistic story though, because I know there are a lot of young adults who don’t have a good home life and they look to other things to make them feel something. Yet, I just found it sad and depressing. I didn’t hate the book, and I know some people will find it compelling. It wasn’t for me, that’s all.

The Official List of Review Requests and From Giveaways

Over the course of book blogging, you begin to accumulate a number of books. Some of these are review requests and some are won from giveaways. You try your best to keep up with them but sometimes time just gets away from you. I am usually pretty diligent with review requests, since it was either my request or I accepted the request. When it comes to the giveaway books, I have found that they are harder to keep up with. This bothers me though. I entered the giveaway and was generously given a free copy of the author’s book. I am a book blogger. It is my duty as one to read and review this book to help promote it further.

Okay. I was going to be good this month. Then for some reason, I got on NetGalley and Edelweiss and that was ruined because I was tempted with some good ones. THEN I saw some e-books on sale, and then some e-books I've been intrigued with and decided to kinda sorta just splurge there. I actually don't think this is a bad thing. I like the idea of having a few reviews to help promote a book when it comes out in 2013. It makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something as a book blogger. Plus, a little birdie told me there may be a read-along for Anna And The French Kiss, so... when I saw it in paperback at the store, I had to snatch it up! <3

That was my awesome month of bookish goodness. How about you? Did you get anything good this week/month?
