Stacking The Shelves #22: January Edition
Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books That Will Make You Swoon
If Only We Four-month-i-versary #Giveaway spectacular!

~*As for me...*~

Well! February has been slightly better than January. I say slightly because a few snags came up along the way, aside from more weather related frustration (welcome to Ohio). One of those snags is that I need to move... AGAIN. As you may remember, I moved out on my own last year around this time (March 23rd to be exact). My lease is almost up and I just got notice that my monthly rent is increasing... by much more than I can afford. So! I'm going to be moving out and into another apartment, one that will be much closer to work.

While this change might be tolerable, I'm more irritated by the heap of annoyances that come with the moving. #1: I have to pack everything up and MOVE again. #2: I have to change my address with every company, and let me tell you, that just takes up way too much time. #3: I lose a huge chunk of my free time because I'm trying to pack, transport all my stuff, and take care of all necessary business associated with moving.

And losing my free time means not much time to write. That one burns me up the most. I've been working REALLY hard trying to write Not Until Tonight so that I can publish it on time. I already moved the release date up from February to March... and now I'm having to move it from March to April.

*sigh*

But I'm not going to let the negative win! I'm viewing it this way: It gives me plenty of time to finish, send to betas, set up the cover reveal/release day blitz/mini blog tour, send out ARCs... So, I'm remaining optimistic about the changes ahead!

Hopefully everyone has had a great February and here's to a great March!!

If Only We Four-month-i-versary #Giveaway spectacular!

In honor of the four-month-i-versary of If Only We, I'm offering up a giveaway AND a super deal!

That's right, it's been four months! Can you believe it? I certainly can't. It's been a wonderful journey and I am so glad that I shared If Only We with the world.

One thing I love the most about publishing this book is that people are getting the moral of the story. As a writer/author, it's the one thing you hope comes across to the reader. With If Only We, there's a lot to the story when it comes to the whole premise of second chances and how important certain things should be in our lives.

“Nothing is determined by fate. We create our own fate.”

This quote from If Only We has been a favorite among reviewers. I swear, it warms my heart every time I think of it, and even more so when others realize the importance of it.

So, thank you readers of If Only We for making this all worth it!

Synopsis for If Only We:

They say all it takes is one wrong move and you lose the game. One false step and you’re trapped. One slip-up in your choice of words and you ruin a friendship forever. That is what they say. They say I lost.

I do not believe them.

At the end of the summer after graduation, Adrienne wonders what happened to cause her life to be in ruins. She isn’t getting along with her mom, her stepsister isn’t talking to her, and, to top it off, the boy she’s been in love with doesn’t want anything to do with her. She believes the turning point was a choice she made at graduation. When she wakes up the next day, she has been transported back three months to that moment, the one where everything started to fall apart.

Adrienne realizes she has been given a second chance—and this time she doesn’t want to mess anything up. Reliving the entire summer, though, turns out to be a lot harder than she thought. As the same days and weeks go by, she starts to see how simple decisions can make a huge impact on the world around her. Despite knowing some of what lies ahead, there are some things she didn’t anticipate. She thought she knew what mistake led her to where she ended up the first time. She was wrong.

And by the time summer is over, she discovers what was really at stake.

Blog Tour: Saving Toby by Suzanne McKenna Link

Welcome to my stop on the Saving Toby Blog Tour!

~*~*~*~*~

Title: Saving Toby
Author: Suzanne McKenna Link
Release date: August 26th, 2013
Genre: New Adult

Loving someone through their hard fall from grace takes a lot of grit.

In school, Toby Faye was a moody kid who sat in the back of class and looked like he wanted to be anywhere but there. Claudia Chiametti, the perfect student, always sat in the front row. She might have forgotten him if it weren't for the fact that his family had been involved in two tragic events. In the small town of Sayville, Long Island, many knew of the family’s dark history.

Hired on as a caretaker to Mrs. Faye, Claudia is thrown into the lives of the widow and her son — a world where sadness lingers and old wounds run deep. Now twenty-one, Toby is not so quiet. A mass of muscles and unruly hair, he is a real head turner. He is jaunty with the confidence his masculine good looks afford him. While not immune to his sexual advances, Claudia sees beyond the cocky grin. Up close, his blue-grey eyes expose something else.

Despite her father’s stern warnings about the family’s violent history, Claudia is empathetic to their plight and vows to help both mother and son move past the hurt. This endeavor forces her to face situations she never imagines possible. She must be tougher than she's ever had to be. Does Claudia have the grit to love Toby through his fall?

Saving Toby, the author's debut novel, is the first book of a two-part story that follows the emotional and gritty tale of a young couple's journey to find themselves and the love they never dreamed existed.

Excerpt:

I quietly followed Toby to his Jeep, but as soon as I saw what big tires it had, I realized it would be difficult for me to get up into it.

“Oh!” I gasped as, without asking, Toby pinned me to his side and my feet left the ground. He lifted me into the door-less passenger side and gently dropped me into the bucket seat. With my pulse racing, he leaned over me and secured my safety buckle. I was too intimidated to say anything.

He tested the strap with a tug and leaned back. His blue-grey eyes caught me staring at him.

“Your hair looks really nice tonight,” he murmured, reaching up to touch a loose strand.

“Thank you,” I said, hoping he didn’t catch the hitch in my voice.

Toby considered his Jeep for a moment. The top was down, and the vehicle open to the night. “The ride will probably mess it up.”

I wasn’t deterred. “After almost being drugged and watching a fist fight up close, what’s a little wind in my hair?”

He didn’t miss the hard edge to my comment. He put a hand over mine. “You’re safe with me, okay?”

His words were protective, like my father’s, but the vibe coming from him was most definitely not paternal. It took a moment before I could answer, but smiling meekly, I nodded.

“Yes, okay.”

Toby drove fast, shifting gears manually with skill. I wasn’t afraid. In fact, with the cool night air blowing in our faces, the ride was exhilarating. We both laughed as my hair blew up and whirled around my head. It felt silly, but for the moment, I didn’t mind. He took the turns quickly, each time reaching over to hold my arm and keep me in my seat.

He pulled up to the curb in front of my house and cut the engine. And then he looked at me. “Can you hang for a few minutes?”

“I thought you had to get home.” I felt uneasiness flutter inside my chest.

“Nah, I wanted to get out of there, too,” he said.

I tried to settle myself. “Alright, but just for a few minutes.”

As he reached towards the stereo to turn on some rock music, the sleeve of his tee shirt slid up revealing the edge of a tattoo design on his upper arm.

“You have a tattoo,” I said, more as an observation than opinion. He nodded, and, before I knew what he was doing, he whipped off his tee shirt. My mouth hung open loosely at the sight of his bare torso.

“See.” He presented his shoulder to me. “I’m actually a cyborg robot.”

I heard the words, but all I really noticed was that he had great shoulders. While his skin looked smooth, the breadth of him was a multitude of carved dips and peaks—mountain ranges of tight muscle. Heat seemed to radiate from his bare skin, warming my face. I tried to ignore how confined it suddenly felt in the car and concentrate on what looked like a realistic looking metal plate with rivets carved in to his upper arm and extending onto his shoulder. The art made it look as though his skin was peeling away, revealing metal just beneath the surface.

I studied it, secretly wanting to touch it, but I kept my hands in my lap.

“Did it hurt?”

“Cried like a baby.”

“Really?”

He laughed. “Do you really think I would tell you that?”

“No, I don’t.” I laughed at myself.

“It wasn’t too bad. Thinking of getting one?” He put his shirt back on, and I was relieved.

“I could never. My father would disown me if I ever came home with a tattoo.”

“Do you do everything your dad tells you to?”

“My dad has lots of expectations,” I said. “I’m trying to figure out which ones are worth challenging. Tattoos are not so important.”

“Hang out with me. That’ll be a challenge,” he smiled.

I chuckled. “Oh, yes. You and I hanging out, that would not go over well. I could just see his face.” Catching myself, I covered my mouth. “I’m sorry, that sounds terrible. It’s just that in his line of work, he assesses people quickly.”

“You don’t have to explain. I understand.” He sighed and drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. I could tell it bothered him more than he let on.

This investigation is getting very personal...

P.I.-in-training Valerie LeRoy is dying to get into the field. So when a client asks her to spy on someone, the thrill of her own case is too tempting to refuse. Instead of a cheating fiance, however, Val's actually checking out P.I. Drake Morgan! Worse, she ends up working with the guy!

Their differing opinions on techniques, and the instant attraction, make the sparks fly. It's almost impossible to focus on their arson investigation. As the hunt for the truth intensifies and their passion rivals the triple-digit temperature, she and Drake learn why Las Vegas is the city that never sleeps...

My Thoughts:

When I began this one, I had totally forgotten what the summary had said about it. I just remembered that I really wanted to read it because it sound like something a little different but still had a romantic element to it. It slipped my mind that the reason was private investigating! Talk about a very nice surprise.

Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. It started strong, with Valerie pretending to flirt with Drake. After their sexually charged first encounter, I had a feeling I knew exactly what was really happening. It reminded me of an episode on Veronica Mars. Go figure! And guess what? I was right!! But, instead of deterring me, it made me even more intrigued to see what would happen next for the two of them. And only like 50% of my interest was for the romance, the rest was wrapped up in the actual story and mystery. As you know, I'm all about romance, so it was absolutely awesome to have the story really draw me in as much as the chemistry between Drake and Valerie.

Sleepless in Las Vegas had me immersed in the intrigue from start to finish. I sat on the edge of my seat, anxious to turn the page and see what would happen next. I loved Valerie and Jake together and their search for who's responsible had me captivated. If this is how Colleen Collins always writes, I am very interested in seeing more of it.

Being Italian and being sexy is supposed to go hand in hand, but somewhere along the line twenty-six-year-old Angelina Rossi’s genes forgot their Italian love goddess heritage. She’s tired of relationships that fizzle the moment things start getting hot. At this rate she’s never going to experience the big ‘O’, proving her ex-boyfriend and co-worker at Sunset Travel right – there’s no thawing the ‘Ice Princess’. Thirty-year-old business executive Trey Landers isn’t surprised by much his best friend and neighbor, Angelina Rossi, throws his way. But this time she throws him one hell of a curve ball. She not only wants him to accompany her on a business trip to Las Vegas and pretend to be her lover in front of her ex-boyfriend, she wants Trey to give her lessons on seducing a man. A man of his word, Trey’s fevered kisses in front of her ex has the ass regretting his decision to break up with her. Not that she’d ever go back to him. How could she after experiencing such passion in Trey’s arms? If only what happened in Vegas didn’t have to stay in Vegas. Or did it?

My Thoughts:

Alrighty, folks. This story, it could have easily been not well liked because it fell along the lines of the stuff I usually don't like: third person and contemporary romance. Not that I don't like contemporary romances, BUT, most of them just fall short of giving me a connection to the story or characters. Not the case with this one though.

Angelina and Trey are absolutely loveable and completely perfect together. They are what made this story what it is. Their friendship was nothing short of sweetness to the tenth power. I was captivated by their relationship from start to finish. Seeing how Trey really feels about Angelina, oh my goodness... I adored it. I adored him. I adored them. It all went deeper than the whole "let's pretend" and it was evident in all the moments they shared. Not many book couples can pull it off right, but Angelina and Trey certainly had me believing they were real.

Only In Vegas kept my interest all the way through. I couldn't get enough of it. Or enough of the romance. Or of Angelina and Trey. All of it. If you love a good romance (scratch that, a great romance), then you'd better check out this gem by Lindsey Brookes. I need to actually buy a copy now because I want to relive this story again.

As a leading columnist for Stiletto, Grace Brighton has built a career warning women about rotten, cheating liars. She just never suspected her fiancé would be one of them. After Grace takes a heart-mending hiatus, her first assignment is to go on a couple of dates with a counterpart from the men's magazine Oxford and report her impressions. Grace 1.0 may have been instantly smitten with the gorgeous correspondent, but Grace 2.0 has sworn off relationships for six months, and she's not falling for his outstanding bod and trophy-winning kisses... or is she?

Jake Malone wants to get back to the fly-by-night, who-knows-what's-next guy he used to be, and he knows exactly how to do it. Oxford is adding a travel section, and Jake—with no wife and no kids and a willingness to live anywhere, eat anything, do everything—is perfect for the job... except that his playboy reputation makes his new editor nervous. To get the gig, he must agree to a fluffy joint article with Stiletto.

But after just one date with snooty, sumptuous, sensational Grace Brighton, Jake starts taking this assignment a whole lot more seriously...

My Thoughts:

Oh how I love thee, adorable little love stories. After reading and loving Lauren Layne's first novel in this series, I definitely had to request this one... and the third book in the series, which I'll be getting to reading soon. I mean, who could pass up a new story by an author you enjoyed? Not me.

In the second book, we get to hear Grace's story. She and Jake are put together for an article and even though they're pushed into it, they discover that they can enjoy it after all. For Grace, it's nice to have something to focus on after being cheated on by her fiancé. She wants to make some changes in her life with herself. But it's kind of hard to make these changes with gorgeous and wonderful Jake around. Okay, make that very hard. I don't think I could resist either.

Love the One You're With is a great second book in what should be an awesome series. Grace and Jake are super cute together, I couldn't stop enjoying their interactions. Lauren Layne has done it again and I definitely can't wait to see what book number three has in store!

Excerpt:

“I need a drink. Now.”

After tossing—fine, throwing—my purse and keys on the couch, I march straight into the kitchen. No more delays, it's time to forget tonight. It was yet another night like all the other first dates that never meet a second one. When you begin to lose count, that's when it's really time for a drink.

Adrian stands there, leaning against the counter in an unbuttoned dress shirt and dark wash jeans. He glances at me as I walk in. “How was your date?” he asks, taking a swig of his scotch.

I brush past him on my mission, opening the cupboard and moving a couple bottles around. I reiterate, “I need alcohol.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I catch him hiding a smile before he says, “That bad?”

My face twitches as I ignore his line of questioning. It is more like a statement he wants me to clarify, even though he already knows the answer. Instead, I ask, “I have vodka left, don't I?” I stand on my tiptoes in hopes of spotting something in the very back. Nothing.

He waltzes over and looks with me, his chin almost touching my shoulder. “I think you polished that one off after last week's date.” His voice is low right next to my ear, very nearly causing a shiver.

He's addicted to booze. She's addicted to sex...staying sober is only half the battle.

No. More. Sex.

Those are the three words Lily Calloway fears the most. But Loren Hale is determined to be with Lily without enabling her dangerous compulsions. With their new living situation—sleeping in the same bed, for real, together—Lily has new battles. Like not jumping Lo’s bones every night. Not being consumed by sex and his body.

Loren plans to stay sober, to right all of his wrongs. So when someone threatens to expose Lily’s secret to her family and the public, he promises that he’ll do anything to protect her. But with old enemies surfacing, Lo has more at stake than his sobriety.

They will torment Lily until Lo breaks.

And his worst fear isn’t relapsing. He hears the end. He sees it. The one thing that could change everything. Just three words.

No. More. Us.

My Thoughts:

I really love Krista, Becca, and the Addicted series. There. I said it. And I'll stand by it. Why? Because this series has it all--romance and love, mystery and intrigue, and don't forget the seriousness of addictions and how they can affect our lives if we can't find a way to keep them under control.

Lily and Loren are back together again after being apart to learn how to fight their personal addictions. It isn't easy, not by a long shot. It certainly doesn't help that somebody is out to get Lily, and nobody knows who it could be. Throughout the story, you're pulling for Lo and Lily, hoping they can overcome all these obstacles, even though you know how insanely hard it is. Not only are you pulling for them as a couple, but also for them individually with their struggles, personally and with friends and family.

Addicted for Now definitely upped the stakes for Loren and Lily, and Krista and Becca Ritchie delivered. Lo and Lily grow closer through the battles. Even when they discover who it is that wants to destroy Lily's life, they stand strong. Sometimes after a good book you don't know if anything can top it, but I think this dynamic duo might be the exception.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Excerpt:

The next week begins uneventfully. Claire and I go about our normal work routines, and things are peaceful. I know that this won’t be a long term living situation for me, but this existence works for the time being. Of course, the absence of Harris probably has made her more relaxed. I haven’t seen or heard from him since Saturday evening. Now, Wednesday night, I’m antsy for another encounter. Sarah’s right, I need to get his number and make things happen.

I’m working on dinner when the front door opens and closes more softly than usual. I’m in the middle of singing to myself, On my Own from Les Miserables, when he starts making his way into the condo. I do not hide my voice from him, instead I work through the words of the song, emoting the loneliness held in the lyrics.

Before I see him, I feel him. The way my heart starts galloping in my chest, the knife becoming slippery in my damp palm. My skin starts to tingle, still humming in appreciation from his earlier touches. I sing softly to myself, the words slipping out. I don’t feel the usual rush of shyness. He should see this side of me.

When our eyes connect as he enters the kitchen, I know he’s feeling something, too, by the way that his eyes soften at the sight of me and his lips flicker upward for a half second. I cut the song short, ending before the singer professes her love.

Neither of us speaks as he crosses the galley kitchen. I avert my eyes back to the task in front of me as he moves behind me. He places one palm on either side of countertop, caging me in.

I concentrate on my breathing, but it doesn’t help the racing of my heart or the butterflies of excitement fluttering in my stomach. We’re not physically touching, but every pore of my body hums with energy.

“Do you feel that?” he asks huskily.

“Yes,” I breathe.

His cheek brushes against my hair in an achingly tender gesture.

“Good.”

His arms drop and he puts distance between us, his features oddly calm.

Wow.

Title: After the Storm
Author: Marie Landry
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19011170-after-the-storm

For most people, starting senior year at a new high school would be a nightmare, but for Ella O’Dell it’s the new beginning she desperately needs. Two months after her mother’s death, she’s ready to leave behind the rebellious, unhappy person she became when she found out her mom was dying.

When Ella meets River Maracle and Sadie Fitzgerald, she begins to learn it’s okay to be herself, even if that means being different. River and Sadie aren’t ashamed of their misfit status—River grew up on a reservation, and his mother is the school counselor; Sadie stands out with her funky homemade clothes, and is a master at ignoring the whispered rumors that have plagued her since the beginning of high school.

Ella finds a kindred spirit in Sadie, and something more in River. After almost a year of pretending to be someone she’s not, she finally embraces life and allows herself to have fun without constant guilt. But despite her budding happiness, something is off with her new life. She doesn’t want to dwell on the past, but Angel Island is a small place, and she soon realizes her demons are harder to outrun than she thought…

About the author:
Marie has always been a daydreamer; since early childhood she's had a passion for words and a desire to create imaginary worlds, so it only seemed natural for her to become a writer. She resides in Ontario, Canada, and most days you can find her writing, reading, blogging about writing and reading, listening to U2, watching copious amounts of TV on DVD, or having grand adventures with her nephews and niece. She's a hopeless romantic, an unapologetic eavesdropper (occupational hazard), an equally unapologetic squeeing fangirl, and a lover of swoonworthy book and TV characters. Excerpt:

When I see Sadie waiting for me at my locker at the beginning of our free period, I know my luck has run out. She always waits for me so we can study together, but today something about her demeanor tells me it’s time to take a trip to the school counselor.

“Do I have to go?” I whine when she hands me the slip of yellow paper with the words ‘Please come to my office during your free period’ written in small, neat script.

“She’s not so bad, I promise.” She links her arm through mine and walks me to Mrs. Maracle’s office. I don’t even have time to collect myself before she knocks on the door, gives me a little salute, and disappears down the hall.

Mrs. Maracle opens the door and steps back to let me in. “Welcome, Ella. I’m glad you could make it.”

As if I have a choice. But of course I can’t say that, so I give her a lame “Thank you” instead. She leads me to the comfy chairs we sat on last time, and I sink down into one.

“Tea?” she asks.

“Sure. Thanks.” I don’t know why she bothers going to the effort of doing something that’s supposedly meant to put me at ease, when I’d be much more relaxed if she just acted like a human being instead of a robot.

A few minutes later she brings two cups of tea to the table and sits down across from me. She blows on the steaming liquid in her cup, looking at me over the rim before taking a sip. “So. I apologize for not meeting with you sooner. I intended to have you into the office on Tuesday, but I got called away unexpectedly. I think from now on we should make a set schedule so you’re not wondering when I’ll be calling you in.” She almost smiles, and the muscles in my shoulders loosen slightly. “How are you finding your first week and a bit at AISS?”

“Good. Really good. I’m enjoying my classes, and my teachers are all really nice.”

“Good.” She nods and takes another sip of her tea. “And you’re making friends?”

“Mmhmm.” I take a gulp of my tea to avoid saying anything else, scalding my tongue and throat.

“Sadie has wonderful things to say about you.”

My eyebrows wing up. “Oh. Well. She’s been great to me. Made me feel really welcome. I-I didn’t have many friends back home, so it’s nice to meet someone like Sadie.”

“Have you made any other friends?” Her dark eyes remind me of a hawk: sharp and keen. She must know by now that I’m friends with River. Has he talked about me? Has she seen us together at lunch and between classes?

“Well, I’ve talked to Kyla Winters a few times. She’s asked me to hang out with her and her friends, but…”

“But?”

I shrug one shoulder. “I’m not really interested in being part of the popular crowd. That was what started my issues last year.”

“Your issues,” she says slowly. She sets her cup on the table and crosses one leg over the other, resting her elbow on her knee and cupping her chin in one hand. “Why don’t you tell me about your issues.”

“I thought you already knew about my issues from my file.” I regret the words instantly, knowing they sound hostile. But this is exactly what I don’t want to do—talk about last year. I want to forget those ten or eleven months ever happened; it’s bad enough that my mind won’t stop dredging up those thoughts and images, but talking about it makes me feel worse.

Mrs. Maracle’s eyes narrow slightly. “A file can only tell me so much. But…if you’re not ready to talk about that just yet, we can talk about other things.”

I don’t relax just yet. I’m sure there’s more to come.

“How are you doing with the journal? Have you written in it?”

“Yes.” It’s not a lie, I have written in it…just not much, and not since the few crossed out lines I wrote Saturday night before Sadie came.

“May I see it?” She holds out her hand. “Not to read it, of course, but just to see how you’re coming along.”

I freeze in panic. Even if all she does is flip through, she’ll see that I’ve only written on the first page. I consider telling her I left it at home, but I can see the notebook peeking out from the side pocket of my bag. I glance at Mrs. Maracle from under my lashes and see her eyeing the book. I pull it out and cradle it in my hands for a moment before thrusting it toward her.

She opens it in the middle and flips through to the beginning, her brows drawing together until she reaches the first page. Her eyes flick up to meet mine, and then she closes the notebook, handing it back to me. She doesn’t say anything, and I begin to fidget in my seat.

“I didn’t know what to write,” I blurt. “Everything seemed wrong. I felt stupid writing my thoughts in a book, and I didn’t know where to begin or what to include.”

Mrs. Maracle leans back in her seat and crosses her legs again. “I like the idea you had of starting it as a letter to your mother. That doesn’t seem like it should be too hard.”

I scoff. “It obviously was, or I would have kept going.”

She purses her lips. “Then maybe talking to me will be easier than writing down your feelings, hmm? What would you say to your mother if she were here right now?”

“What does it matter? She’s not here.” I know I’m being rude, but I don’t care. I don’t want to talk about my mom with this woman who doesn’t seem to have a motherly bone in her body.

My attitude doesn’t seem to faze her. “Pretend she is. Pretend she can hear you right now. What would you say? What would you want to tell her?”

My heart starts to race and my hands begin to shake. I tuck them under my legs so she won’t see. “I would…I…I…” There are too many thoughts in my head. It feels like they’re crowding in, swelling in size and volume until my temples pound from the pressure. “I can’t do this.”

“You need to, Ella. You need to talk to me.”

“Why?” I snap. “What do you care? You don’t know anything about me, but you’ve made all these assumptions based on a stupid record that couldn’t possibly tell you anything important about what happened last year. What does it say anyway? That my mom got sick? That my sister left school to take care of her? That I started hanging out with the popular kids, and then the smokers, and then the kids who were into drugs and alcohol? Does it tell you that I spent months avoiding my mother as much as possible? That I made my sister’s life a living hell because I thought our mother loved her more and I wanted to punish them both for that?”

Her eyes are wide, stunned. I’ve shown more emotion in the last minute than she’s shown in all three of our meetings, and for some reason that pisses me off even more. I scan the wall, looking at her university degrees, the proof that she’s supposedly suitable for this job. But her coldness, her bluntness, the way I feel like she’s judging every word that comes out of my mouth, makes me want to rip each frame from the wall and smash it.

“Do you feel better?” she asks quietly.

I gape at her in disbelief. That’s it? If someone had lost it on a teacher like I just did at my old school they would have had detention for a month, or been suspended. A month of detention would almost be preferable to having to meet with Mrs. Maracle two or three times a week.

Finally I say, “No. What would make me feel better is not having to talk about this at all. It’s over. I don’t know why you can’t just let it go. Let me move on.”

She slides to the edge of her seat and waits until I meet her gaze. “Because you’re never going to truly move on until you address your feelings, Ella. You’re trying so hard to bury all your hurt and anger and guilt, but instead of actually forgetting about it, it’s eating you alive.”
